ENGINE MANAGEMENT
SafeSTOP BORDER EAST LONDON
In excess of 80 000 Safestop systems are in daily use throughout South and Southern Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, The United Kingdom, Israel and Australia.
The Safestop factory in East London South Africa, employs a staff of eighteen people, most from previously disadvantaged backgrounds who can collectively produce up to one thousand five hundred units daily.
Our own innovative Electronic Engineers design, test and manufacture products for se in the Road and Passenger Transport, Mining, Agriculture, Manufacturing, Shipping, Fishing, Security and Defence Industries, in house.
Safestop is currently advancing into areas by introducing programmable processors that permit the integration of individual systems into one compact multi functional system, enabling the customer to select the system that he requires to meet his specific needs –
all in one unit!
We at Safestop listen to what the marketplace requires and manufacture products to suit the need. We do not dictate what the marketplace should have.
SafeSTOP BODER EAST LONDON Protection
Safestop manufactures protection systems before major damage can occur. It is a policy of Safestop that all protection systems be “Failsafe” and inform the user of a problem prior to stopping the vehicle.
Engine Management
The Safestop electronic engine management system can monitor, up to five individual circuits with dedicated switches to protect against amongst other problems.
- Coolant Loss
- High Average Coolant Temperature
- Cylinder Head Temperature
- Low Engine Oil Pressure
- Low Engine Oil Level
- High Average Engine Oil Temperature
- Broken Fan Belt
In each case the driver / operator receives an audio fault warning ten seconds prior to a controlled engine stop taking place. An interactive light display indicates the cause of the problem thus keeping downtown to a minimum.

Various models available and dependent on vehicle application
Speed Limiter System – SLR:
Driver Control System restricting vehicle from exceeding preset Speed limits, device has a pre warning audio circuit. The system has been proven to reduce Fuel Consumption, Tyre and Brake wear and meets SA Road Law legal requirements. Various models available and dependent on vehicle application
Idle, Rev and Speed Limiter System – IRS:
Driver Control System restricting vehicle from exceeding preset Speed & Rev limits, Excessive Continuous Engine Idle with an option of a 5 or 10 minute cut off period. There is an audio/visual driver/operator pre-warning function. The system has been proven to reduce Fuel Consumption, Tyre and Brake wear and meets SA Road Law legal requirements. Various models available and dependent on vehicle application
Automated PTO Safety Control System – RLS:
Automatic safety system providing operator and vehicle safety and reducing potential for damage to the gearbox and PTO system. Monitors park brake, clutch, gear position and selection, PTO engagement and controls the throttle and idle screw. Has automatic engine rev up to a preset limit on confirmation of PTO engagement and is designed to operate in stationary as well as rolling application – Specifically designed around Isuzu vehicles but can be adapted to suit other vehicle marques
Digital Hourmeter:
Dual circuit designed to monitor engine hours between services as well as cumulative (total) engine hours. Digital display flashes and pre-warns ten (10) hours before service is due and is resettable to zero hours after service is completed. Operates on both 12 and 24volt electrical systems and monitors, either engine revs or a control switch to activate the timer. Easy Digital readout each time that the ignition is switched on

OPERATION
As the ignition is turned on the red oil pressure light, the green ‘Go’ light and the buzzer turns on. If no attempt is made to start the engine within 10 seconds the ‘Go’ light turns off leaving the oil pressure light and the buzzer on. (A stationary engine has no oil pressure).
To reset the Auto Start override the ignition switch must be turned off and then on again. This regenerates another 10 seconds of automatic override for the oil pressure circuit. As long as the ‘Go’ light is on the fuel valve is open and the engine will run. As soon as the engine is running and oil pressure builds up, the oil pressure light turns off, leaving the green ‘Go’ light on.
In the event of a fault the respective circuit light immediately turns on together with the buzzer. The ‘Go’ light remains on for a further 10 seconds. After this period the ‘Go’ light turns off, the fuel valve closes and the engine stalls. Only the circuit responsible for stopping the engine will be displayed.

ENGINE MANAGEMENT
INTRODUCTION
Engine failure is the transport industry’s nightmare. It involves untimely expensive repairs, which upset the repairs and maintenance budget, causes late deliveries, involves downtime and loss of revenue of having to hire a replacement vehicle.
All these problems can be minimised by installing a SAFESTOP Engine Management System.
DESCRIPTION
Equipment consists of an epoxy encapsulated control module, dedicated wiring harness, dashboard display unit and a high frequency Piezo buzzer. Standard engine equipment includes switches for low oil pressure, high water temperature low water level and a high flow fuel valve with all the necessary fittings and piping. If required, systems are available with a maximum of 5 protection circuits. Extras can include switches for engine, transmission and hydraulic oil temperatures and levels.
FUNCTION
The system’s uniqueness is its built in diagnostics and pre- warning functions.
If any circuit is tripped due to a pre-set parameter being exceeded, switch failure, or loss of continuity of a signal wire, the driver is alerted to the impending shut down of the engine by the appropriate circuit light and buzzer. This 10 second pre-warning allows the driver to take necessary action by moving the vehicle to the side of the road before engine power loss occurs.
By virtue of the priority fault circuit and the in-cab display unit, the system is self-diagnostic. If any, or all circuits trip, only one control light indicates at a time. Downtime is reduced dramatically as the fault, which caused the breakdown, is immediately identified. When rectified, the system indicates the next fault (if present) or returns to the normal start mode.
The SAFESTOP Engine Management System is fail-safe and any fault with the engine switches, wiwiring or main control module causes the engine to shut down. Simply put, if the vehicle leaves the depot the system is working

Rev Limiter:
Engine speed, or revs, behave in the same way. If the revs are set to say, 30001/min, then the warning sounds at 2850 r/min and power loss occurs at 3000 r/min. Power is re-instated again at 2850 r/min.
Do not set the rev switch point below the manufacture’s injector pump governed speed as this could have a detrimental effect on correct gear selection and lead to labouring of the engine.
Idle Limiter:
This governor is a function of speed. If the vehicle is moving, the idle timer is disabled. If the vehicle is stationary, the 5 minute timer is enabled. Thus, after 5 minutes of stationary time, the engine will shut down. It does not accumulate time. If the vehicle is stationary for say, 3 minutes, as soon as movement is detected, all accrued time is cancelled and the timer will again start from zero as soon as the vehicle stops moving. After 4.5 minutes of stationary time the buzzer sounds intermittently to warn the driver that the engine will shut down within 30 seconds. Should the engine shut down, an immediate restart is possible.
A facility exists where vehicles which operate a PTO while stationary can automatically by-pass the Idle Limiter function. When the PTO is disengaged, the Idle timer becomes active
